A lecturer in the department of Biochemistry, University of
Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), has been abducted by unknown gunmen. Dr. Reginald
Ohiri was kidnapped, when the yet to be identified gunmen forced their way into
his compound through the gate on Monday evening, 1st August.
According to
Vanguard, the kidnappers have established contact with the family of the victim
and are demanding N2 million ransom for his release. According to sources, Ohiri
was abducted from his residence in Aluu community, Ikwerre local government
area of Rivers state.
The spokesman for the university where he lectures, Dr.
William Wodi, confirmed the development, but said he is not aware of the exact
time the lecturer was abducted. Wodi said: “I have heard about it. His name is
Dr. Ohiri and a lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry, UNIPORT. I learnt
he was kidnapped at his resident in Aluu.” The public relations officer of the
Rivers state police command, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, when he was contacted, said he
had just received a call on the development but said he had not been fully
briefed. The PRO also stated that the command would immediately begin an
investigation into the abduction.
Recently, a notorious kidnap kingpin who has
been on the wanted list of security agencies, Kennedy Itoje has been sentenced
to 13 years in jail with hard labor by a Delta state High Court for the kidnap
of a nurse. The notorious kidnapper also demanded the sum of N20 million as
ransom for her release.
